Youth Council – Joshua Velasquez

Hi, my name is Joshua Velasquez, I attend Notre Dame High School and I`m currently in grade 11. I was born on June 10, 1996 and I am 16 years old. My hobbies are drawing, solving puzzles and playing basketball with my friends. I was originally from the Philippine’s, and I moved to Canada on September 30, 2006. The reason for my family to move here is because of better education and quality of life. My parents wanted the best education for me so that I can be successful and help other people when I grow up.

When I finish high school, I want to pursue computer engineering. I wanted to pursue this course because when I was a kid, I was always fascinated by robots and computers. My love for computers and electronics grew as I learned more and more about them. I also realized that technology will revolutionize everything including humans.

When I first joined NHCA I was expecting to see youths that are the same age as us, but as we went in the NHCA meeting room, I was really surprised that even younger youths than us were trying to contribute to their community. The members of the council made us feel welcomed to their community. As weeks passed, I realized how dedicated they are to their community. I was really impressed how they worked hard to accomplish goals before we even joined the NHCA.

NHCA gave me an opportunity to help others not just within the community but other communities also. I joined Northern Hills Community Association because I needed it for my IB creative action service or otherwise known as CAS. My main objective was to include NHCA for my long term project, but as I joined the council I learned more and more about planning and organizing……it’s really hard!! I used to think that planning events are easy, all you needed was a place and some money, but as time went on I realized how hard it is to consider other factors also. This includes renting the place, the money and the estimation of people attending, etc….

So far I have learned a lot about NHCA. I realize how essential planning and organizing is to every event. I hope that I continue to help the NHCA and others so that we can build a better stronger community, because working together is the key to success.
