With the increasing youth population in the Northern Hills communities, the NHCA is looking to expand our youth engagement efforts. Our first effort has been to start a youth forum where participants from grades 10-12 will be able to voice their concerns and ideas on how to improve the quality of life for all youth in our community.

Have you always wanted to start a community basketball league, or a kids’ play group? Do you have a unique idea for a child or youth program in the Northern Hills community? Along with the youth forum that will be started, we are actively looking for people who are interested in helping expand the youth programs in the Northern Hills.

If you are interested in participating in our efforts please email us at youth@northernhills.ab.ca
We look forward to hearing from you!

    Youth Writing Group
The NHCA is excited to announce a new 6 week program for kids between the ages of 9-11 years old.  This program is lead by the Calgary childrens author Simon Rose, who has led workshops for the International Childrens’ Festival, the City of Calgary, and various community summer camps. He will lead your child through the creative world of writing and storytelling. The following is a description of the program that will be offered:
Fabulous Fantasy Realms: In these classes, we examine the elements of fantasy and the many creatures and characters that inhabit the fantasy realm. You will create your own fantasy kingdom, complete with its system of government, myths and legends, magical objects, currency, culture, different races, wildlife, major landmarks, maps, natural features such as mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, deserts, oceans and more. You will also invent your own unique imaginary creature, along with its powers, enemies, diet, habitat, the land where it lives and so on.

You’ll design a flag or banner for your country and explain why it was chosen by the rulers. What is the type of climate in your country? What are the people like? What is the system of government? What is the economy like? Does the country have any natural resources and if so, what are they used for? What about the currency? What is it called and what do the coins look like? You’ll need to create a unique culture for your country too. Does it have a distinctive type of food? What about music or the instruments on which it is played? These sessions are designed to enable you to unleash your own incredible imagination to create a truly unique fantasy realm.

All 20 places on this program are now filled. It was offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Current NHCA Members were given advance notice of this program by email, but in the interest of fairness we offered this program to anyone living in the Northern Hills area and all NHCA Associate Members from the surrounding communities. The program will run for six Saturdays starting January 7th, 2012 from 9:30-11am. The cost for the 6 week program is $50 for all NHCA members, and $75 for non-members.

The program is now full, but we are able to place people on a wait list without payment.
If you have any questions about this or any other NHCA Youth program, please email us at youth@northernhills.ab.ca
