NHCA Outdoor Rinks – We Need YOU!

Winter is almost here!

VolunteersNeededPrepare your skates to hit the ice and spend some time with your family and friends at one of the outdoor rinks in the community. The outdoor rinks will be open with the combined effort of the NHCA, the City of Calgary and dedicated volunteers.

The NHCA once again will be offering Northern Hills residents the opportunity to enjoy one of their favorite winter activities at the Panorama Hills and Harvest Hills outdoor rinks for 2015-16. The site in Harvest Hills, an earthen berm rink, is located at the end of Harvest Lake Drive, next to the Harvest Community Gardens. The Panorama Hills Site, installed with boards to form the ice surface and developed as an adopt-a-rink, is located at 400 Panamount Blvd NW (in the green space at Panamount Square, opposite St Jerome Elementary). See our community pleasure rinks page for mapped locations.

Some things to remember this skating season:

  • These rinks are for pleasure use only. Hockey is not permitted as there are no boards to stop the pucks from flying off into neighbouring residential properties (shinny is ok).
  • Helmets are strongly recommended!
  • To reduce the work needed to recover from a thaw, please stay off soft, slushy or puddled rink surfaces.
  • Please share the rinks. These are free for everyone to use.
  • To keep this program sustainable and the rinks operational during the winter, we need the participation of volunteers to help organize, flood and maintain the ice surfaces at these two rink locations. Without the team of wonderful rinks volunteers, who build up the layers of ice that eventually become the flat surface used by the skaters, or clear the snow and maintain the surface throughout the season, it would not be possible to provide these rinks in our communities.
  • If you are interested in helping getting these rinks up and running, please contact community@northernhills.ab.ca  as soon as possible.
