Attention to landscape is one aspect of a healthy community and very important to the north central communities of the Northern Hills. The appearance of our neighbourhoods and the pride residents feel regarding it, is crucial to a sense of well-being.
The community enhancement portfolio includes a beautification committee, planting shrubs and flowers on private and public property and maintaining landscape around entrance gates and fences.
“We’re being guerrilla gardeners – going out and cleaning up corners and gates that belong to residents or areas created by the developers. Pulling weeds, watering and planting flowers. At this time, we have 10 people in the committee with captains in three of the four communities and we’re always on the lookout for new locations and volunteers to help.”
Current Locations:
- Corner of Country Hills Boulevard and Harvest Hills Gate
- Corner of Country Hills Boulevard and Country Hills Drive
- Corner of Coventry Hills Boulevard and Coventry Hills Way
The NHCA community enhancement project to restore and refurbish each of these beds back to health and vitality was commenced in 2009 using volunteer labor, some modest funding, donations from sponsors and a vision that we could make a difference in the look and pride of our communities. It seems to be working! By using appropriate resource conservation principles and species selection the gardens have flourished despite the shoe-string resources, finicky Calgary weather and modest budgets.
Neighbourwoods Program
Our community association partnered with the City of Calgary to replenish and enhance the urban forest in our communities through this volunteer tree planting program.
